Updates..

I feel like I have been a slacker with blogging!
Anyway, I am going to bring you all up to speed really quick. I do have some faithful followers and many who email me privately, so I will do a little better with updating. I am not a daily blogger and I feel that if I do not have something meaningful to blog about, then I don't!

Here is the deal:
There are 3 families waiting for placements with my agency, including us and close friends of ours. I am unsure of who the third family is. My SW called me two weeks ago to give us updates and to see how we were doing. Basically all of the potential situations that came in decided to parent, which is a good thing.
Our SW wanted us to bring in our shorter edition of our BM letter since ours was longer than two pages in our profile. They prefer it to be shorter because in many cases the BM only has about 10 minutes or so to look through profiles when they get emergency situations, like calls from the hospital. I will take the edited version in over the holidays.

We originally said that we were going to go with another agency that did a lot of AA and biracial placements monthly, however, we decided to give our agency some time. I still follow the other agency, but I didn't want to become impatient and the fees were much more than what we already invested in our agency. So, we are holding out on that for a minute before we move forward to another agency. Although children are priceless, we have already invested in one agency, and we did not want to go overboard with fees since we want more children.
I found out that pretty much all of the private agencies here are a little slower now with getting the AA infants in now for some reason, with the exception of the county agencies in which they may be foster to adopt and that is a whole different route in some instances.

After we turned in our profile we also had an appointment with a fertility specialist and low and behold we found out the underlying issue of my delay of pregnancy which was in insulin resistance that was discovered after a 2 hour glucose test and a saline sonohystogram. It is very treatable and very common and they gave me medication to resolve the issue. They wanted me to take the medication for about 2-3 months before proceeding with TTC. I wanted to have a placement prior to moving forward with conceiving, but all things happen for a reason. So, we will see what happens.

We committed to the adoption process for over a year without TTC or seeing a specialist by choice. My plans for adopting were always there regardless and they have not changed. After we turned in our profile I moved forward with seeing the specialist and I am glad that I did. It was refreshing to find out the issue and to know that I prevented a possible medical condition such as diabetes in the future if it were left untreated. I found out after my first appointment (workup) what was my problem and I am thankful to the specialist out there who know their stuff!

I must admit that initially it was a little uncomfortable taking the step to go see the specialist because in your mind you feel like this is something you can do on your own and fertility is such a personal issue. However, once I had my first appointment I realized that it is so many more people that have difficulties with having a second child, delays conceiving period, or unexplained infertility. However, many people do not discuss their fertility issues and it appears as though everyone is fine, which is not the case.

Nursery:
Our bedding finally came in! I will be posting pictures later this afternoon of the bedding. Once the entire room is completed with all of the finishing details, I will post the room.

with a little help....

I just wanted to share this little card that I made today with the help of my husband. It is simple, but cute.
I was tired of not being able to navigate the programs myself! In the past, I would come up with designs and he would create them for me for different things. Now, I am learning to make them on my own using the programs.
This card is for a friend/neighbor in my neighborhood who gave birth to her second son about 2 weeks ago. I am pulling together her custom basket and this card will go inside. I picked up the card stock to print it on earlier this evening.

I am excited about designing more things on my own by actually bringing my design concepts to the screen!

four legged baby!

I do not post pics of my "chocolate drop" often. Here he is, ready for the fall and ready to chase the first bird that comes out!

cute sign

I guess due to the rainy and misty weather that we had in our area, we did not have my little people stopping by. I was prepared with a few bags of candy and my little sign out in the yard. I think we had a small group of little people come around 8:52pm and they were the last group. Oh well, maybe next year my little sign will be in good use! I found the sign about a month ago while looking for some other items. I thought that it was too cute!

We decided to stay in after a long day for both of us since we both worked today. We were actually invited to two different adult parties, however, we decided to relax at home. We both needed the rest.

quick project

My wreath....

I finally put my fall wreath together. I purchased a wreath and the leaves and other items to dress it up over a month ago. I purchased the wreath separately and received it half off ($4.99). I returned about a week later to the same store and picked up decorations for the wreath (ribbons, leaves etc). I think everything came to about $20.00 to complete this little project.

Today, I finally pulled everything out and I put the wreath together so that I could decorate my front door for the change of the season. Before you know it, it will be time to put up the Christmas decorations. I don't think that the wreath came out too bad!
Now, I have my wreath, my 3 pumpkins and my fall mat outside to make things kind of complete and a warm welcome!

product

A little while back I mentioned a product that we were told about that preserves your fabric covered furniture. When we were looking for a rocker for the nursery I was tempted to go with a dark colored fabric only because I was afraid of the fabric showing dirt after much use. However, when we were looking and trying to make decisions, the owner of the store informed us of this product. We decided to order the lighter fabric that we liked because of this product. We actually picked it up from a local fabric store not far away and it is well worth purchasing to preserve your fabric covered pieces. I think that the can was only $14.00. I hope this helps some of you who are afraid of lighter colored pieces!

autumn

This time of the year is one of my favorite seasons. I enjoy seeing the leaves change colors and fall to the grass. I also enjoy taking part in decorating with the beautiful colors of this season. This year I began decorating a little earlier.
This season is not only a season of Thanksgiving, but it is also a season to enjoy the beauty of what God has created and watching all of it literally changing before our eyes. I think that sometimes we become so busy that we forget to notice and give thanks to the little things right around us.

hand delivered..

We hand delivered our profile to the agency today around lunch time after we left a doctors appointment, blood work and all of that good stuff (nothing bad, all good, all good!)
Actually, we had to take 2 copies of the profile. This felt really good to get out of our hands. Trust me. It was time to get that document out of our hands.
I will post pictures later that I took of the two books that we left at the agency.

The little lady at the front desk (their Secretary) loved our profile book and was tickeled to death when she started looking through it. She said that she wanted to look through it before she took it back to the director because she gets to see the profile books that come through being the front desk person. She told us that the birth families will really love what we have created since it was like a keepsake.
She asked us, how did you get these pictures printed on the pages perfect like this and shaped like that. I looked at hubby and smiled. It was all of his design work. It was truly a work of art and printed on paper that you would publish a book with colored photos, in terms of paper quality.

We were also able to meet the new director over the agency and she was thrilled that we brought the profiles in. She advised us that they are showing the profiles this coming week and she was very excited. The Director was going to go ahead and take our books back to her office to lock them up and the Secretary told her that she wanted to look at them first and she took them back from the Director! Old School, I tell ya!

Our profile was a total of 20 pages (including the BM letter, that we addressed by saying Hello). We had tons of pictures of family, events and everything. We designed it like a book and had each page printed on 12x12 pages. Everything was color and each page was designed differently. After my husband brought the printed document home to put into the book last night I saw some small errors (nothing big). We can fix those and when we print more copies and they will be perfect in the event that we have to take more. Hopefully not because we put them in nice books. We would hope that the person or persons that look at our book will almost feel like they are apart of our family after seeing our profile book.

My husband even asked me, " They're not going to let people walk off with the book if we haven't had a placement with them, are they?" I said, "I should hope not". They are big books, and really only the families who select the adoptive family should take the book. Thats just my opinion, because it is a such a personal keepsake document, why would anyone want it if they didn't select the family?

I will try to do a post another day on the order of our profile and how we arranged it.

often forgotten...

The laundry room is a room that is often forgotten about when decorating a home. For some reason, I believe that all rooms in a home should have a personal touch. This is probably about the only room in my home that has not been painted with our personal preference. It still has the Krisp Khaki that we chose when we had our home built. I realized when we had our home study visit when I showed the room it was neat and orderly and had cute little baskets and was organized, but it lacked character. It is almost like I just forgot about that room!

Even though it is not a place where you will entertain or anything, I feel like when you open the door to a laundry room it should be refreshing too. Big or small, the rooms can have a cute personal touch.

I found 4 vintage pieces earlier this week to use in the room. I was able to get 50% off on all four pieces ( $4.00, $5.00, $10.00 and $13.00) for the vintage look. I really think they are cute and all I need to do now is decide on what color I would like to brighten up the room.

I already have cute little wickered baskets in there to hold little things as well as a chrome spacesaving rolling cart for all of our laundry needs that slides in between the washer and the sink.

My next project is to have cabinets made for the room. Our friend that did our custom closet is going to do the cabinets for the laundry room to replace the white, metal rack. I have the color and glaze picked out for the cabinets and he has the design based upon the room measurements. I really would like to take advantage of the ceiling height with the cabinets. He gave us a great quote and I am going to move forward with that project this fall.

I really prefer to have all cabinets to have everything tucked away inside neatly. I am not sure why I did not have cabinets done when we built (I guess it was not a priority at the time). I figured these cabinets will eventually add value to the home when things turn around with the real estate arena.

This room is often forgotten about. Even without cabinets in a laundry room, it can be dressed up with art, a fresh bright color of paint that opens up the room, and baskets to organize clutter.

project for the week

Yesterday I went to a few of my favorite stores during the day. It was amazing that everyone was having sales. I went two craft stores and found this at the last and they actually had all of the picture frames 50% off and mostly everything in the store (that I picked up anyway) was 50% off except for the wooden block that I purchased.

I was able to get some really cute picture frames for practically nothing and I picked up a wooden block that I am going to paint. I will try to remember to show the finished product.

By the way, Michaels also had a great sale. I was able to get 45% off on my scrapbooks. I felt really good when I left there.

Question...

Wipes..

I have a question for all of my blog mommy's out there. How many packs of wipes do you think that you go through in a month?
I started stocking up on cases of wipes and refill packs a few months back when I would catch them on sale. I recently purchased a few packs of the pampers wipes that came three refills to a pack. I was just curious about how many packs do you think that you go through.

Updates..

I promised that I would share updates on our process when I could.
So, this is where we are. Now, we are talking to our SW about twice a week due to the events taking place. She called us mid week to ask us could we bring in 2 copies of our profile this coming week because our profile will be shown to a potential family with a due date coming up soon. I did not panic and I did not become excited because "it is what it is" until everything is final. I did not even ask what the gender was! I listened to the information that she had and I agreed to bring it in.

Being that I was sick last week, we did not have an opportunity to get it printed and we were not able to send the final product to the agency last week. She was unaware that I was severely ill until she called because she did not talk to me towards the end of last week. So, I told her that I would bring in the copies this week in person since I am home all of this week. They will be showing the birth family profiles at the end of this coming week or the early portion of the following week.
This forced us to get it out of our hands this week since we have been preoccupied with designing the pages and making sure that everything is in there that needs to be.

We have also been in contact with another agency that has a lot of placements regularly with much shorter wait periods and with more situations. They came highly recommended as well by other AP's who went with them.
We will move forward with them if these particular situations do not work out with our current agency. We felt like we have given ourselves a fair amount of time with our current agency. So, we established a particular time that we would move forward with someone else if things did not work out or they did not have more situations.

A close friend of mine told me on Friday when we were talking about what is going on and she said, " It's already done". God has chosen the child for us, and now we just have to wait and see which child it is by going through these final processes. We are truly practicing discernment with this and not attaching ourselves to any situation due to being anxious and impatient, until we know and feel that it is the child that God wants for us. I believe that we will truly know and feel a sense of peace and fulfillment when it is the right situation.

This is all that I am able to share at this point regarding our potential placements.
I will try to update what I can when I can on our process that we are going through now.

good deal...

On yesterday, I stopped by one of my favorite stores (the one with the red and white bulls eye) to pick up another book for my god daughters birthday presents.

Something told me to cruise by the baby department and I did. When I strolled down the baby isle I happened to see Graco convertible car seats for $50.00 for yesterday and today only. It was not a misprint, it was truly marked down to $50.00 for Friday and Saturday only. I was on my cell phone talking to a friend while I was strolling through and she suggested that I get it and I can always return it if consumer report did not givea good recommendation.

I made another phone call and then I called my husband to advise him that I found a deal on a convertible car seat and he met me at the store. We purchased the seat and went home and he checked on the ratings. The seat actually rated very well for a convertible seat that faces forward. We decided to keep it and have it as a back up convertible seat in addition to the other convertible seats that were on our wish lits.

Interestingly enough, one of my girlfriends said that the store had the car seats in their circular for this weekend and it could be easily overlooked because she just noticed it today when we were speaking about it. I am still kind of tickled at the fact that I was in the right place at the right time to snag a good deal for this convertible seat. We stopped by later this evening and they had more seats on sale today. They are an excellent way ot give someone a nice baby shower gift and not break your budget while giving.

I will post pictures later... I think I over did it today running around all day. I am not 100% yet.

Eight years ago today

(I am sorry that I am 2 days late releasing this post)

It doesn't seem like 8 years ago today to me. It seems like yesterday to us. I remember what I was wearing, what I was listening to, where I was and the emotions that took over my body.

Eight years ago, I was living in NYC, dating my husband and on my way to work. When I arrived at my job, I will never forget that I was listening to a jazz station and it was interrupted by an important message.

The message was that there was a fire in Tower 1 at the the Trade Center and they were unsure at the time of what caused it because it just happened, possibly a small plane. I took the keys out of my car and and took my belongings with me into my job. I told a mutual friend of my husband and I (he introduced us) that there was a fire at Tower 1, and I wasn't for sure of the details. I knew his wife's brother worked in Tower 1 and that is why I told him. His wife and I were very close friends. No one really moved or panicked at that time because we didn't know. Within minutes others grabbed their radios and mini tv's and listened to the news.

While we were watching and listening, plane number two hit the second tower right in front of our eyes. We were in shock, literally. At this point everyone knew and felt NYC was under attack. I really did not know what to do or think. I had never experienced anything like this is in my years on this earth. We had no phone reception on cell phones or anything. I just sat there frozen not knowing really what to do. I couldn't call my husband (then boyfriend) who then worked midtown in Time Square, which we also later found out was a target.

Suddenly, the small things that I complained about in life and relationships things didn't seem so big when we were going through this terrible day. I remember feeling so helpless not being able to call my parents or anyone. We all had busy signals. All we could do was sit there. I went home and tried to get on my internet and we could not because there was not internet service, telephone services at that time due to everything being shut down.

My friend's wife, Susan arrived at my job within about two to three hours after walking from lower Manhattan across the Brooklyn bridge to my job (and her husband's job as well) covered in dust, dirt and everything else from the buildings collapsing. I took her to pick up her daughter from daycare and to see if we could get any information on her brother. This was one long afternoon and the days became longer. Her brother worked in Tower 1, on the 110th floor I believe. Those floors were hit first and everyone perished from the company that he worked for. She had to gather so many things and make so many calls to check and see if he was still living, and or hurt in a hospital. Days and days went by and there was no answers of his whereabouts. Everyone present at his workplace were presumed deceased due to the impact and fire from the plane. How could this happen?

I thank God everyday because those who know me knew that I planned on being down there that week. I had made plans to meet my friend (Susan) for lunch or something because I was still off from work and I wanted to spend some time with her because she had a rough summer with some personal things, and I wanted to visit the buildings, eat there and have her meet me on her lunch. She worked on Water street for a major company. She told me that there were plenty of spots to eat there and shops, and just to let her know which day.

I had never been to the trade centers since living in NYC since 1999 and when we flew back from my parents after Labor Day weekend 2001 and circled the area before landing I told my husband (boyfriend) then, that I needed to go there and visit the buildings since I was off. However, when I arrived at my brownstone apartment, my work assignment came in early and told me that I could go ahead and start. Seriously. I was a full time contracted therapist with NYC school. I was shocked because we usually received our assignments to start after the 13th or so as contractors. So, that blew my plans for shopping and going down there that week. Little did I know, it was a blessing.

That day was the day that fear slowly became apart of me on a daily basis due to the events that occurred. We stayed home from work for the remainder of the week due to the high alerts. We were subjected to remain in our homes watching the attacks over and over again on television on every channel. I was unable to go home to my parents even if I wanted to. Our city was on lock down.

No one could come in and we couldn't go out. Then there was the threat of anthrax. We were afraid to leave our homes and walk outside due to all of the threats. I am ashamed to say that I was truly terrorized for a good while and allowed the events to change how I lived, which was in fear. We were also afraid to go purchase food/ sandwiches at that time from places that were considered "suspect" due to their nationality. We were truly living in fear. I had ton's of friends and family who were trying to call and email to see if I would respond to the email. It was really strange because they all had these short messages on the email like, "Are you Okay" and they were wanting to see if I was going to "read" the message to see if I was alive, in a sense.

I remember driving back home on tree lined block in Brooklyn on that evening after being with Susan. It was such a weird feeling because you didn't know what neighbor would not be arriving home or who was lost. My girlfriend/co-worker came over and stayed at my brownstone since she was afraid to stay at her apartment as well. We went through the next few days together in fear.

Later in 2002 my parents told me that I was a totally different person on the phone and whether I wanted to admit it or not, they could hear the depression and fear in my voice when they called daily to check on us, no matter how much I tried to fake that I was okay. My father told me later that he felt like he aged 10 years waiting to hear from me and know that I was okay, because he knew I was a free spirit and loved shopping and I could have been anywhere.

About a month later we held Susan's brother's memorial service and the CEO of the company spoke there. If I am correct, the CEO was the only person that lived from his company because he wasn't there. It was really sad. The majority of the employees were so young and fresh out of college.

I do not talk about this event often, but I had to remember the people who were lost on that day and what we all went through. It is one thing to see it on television, but it is another thing to live through the chaos and experience it first hand.

It took me a while before I would go shopping back in Manhattan which would require me to either to take the Brooklyn Bridge by car or subway. I was so scared because of all of the previous threats. Finally, my husband told me that I needed to stop living like that because life must go on. I had stopped going to watch him at Basketball City at Chelsea Piers where he would play and work out and I could work out as I watched the corporate games during my workout. Many of the local celebs and athletes played there against corporate teams as well some times. It was a really neat place. However, I avoided it after the events that occurred.

I was nervous on subway due to the structural damage and I was just afraid of being in the city again and I was afraid something was going to happen again and I would be trapped or killed. Everything was different about a month after the event when I traveled into the city for the first time since the attacks. I avoided going anywhere near ground zero as well for over a year.
The funny thing was that my first trip back into the city, we went shopping and Nike Town was our last stop.
On our way to check out a buzz came over the store with the employees that a well known actor was in the store with the initials D.W.!
I thought he was gone and when we were headed out, he walked right by me cool as ever and dressed normal. Mr. Washington definitely has a certain charisma about him and looks like a pretty down to earth in person to me. I didn't even speak when he walked right by me. I just looked at some sneakers in the lobby as he walked by and my husband looked at me like why didn't you speak???
Even though I was used to seeing actors and actresses all of the time, this was something that took my mind off being fearful while I was in the city!

The next few months were interesting and I remember being calmer because I saw the presence of so many police officers and military personnel at bridges and at the subway stations. I did not mind at all having my trunk searched before heading across a bridge. It brought a lot more peace to me during those times.

I remember another friend, Portia, who used to work with me in NYC from fall 99 to summer 2000 flew in from LA later in 2002 and wanted to meet me at a popular clothing store in the city called Century 21 for some good buys. I met her and forgot that it was right there by the store when I came out of the train station. She wanted to see all of the pictures on the fences and everything that came with ground zero. I did not. However, that was a healing moment for me because I overcame my fear with a lot of prayer.

Remembering all of those who were lost or lost family and friends on this day.

(I may try to scan some pictures from my 5 years living in NYC and post later. )

Ahead of my time....

Prior to leaving NYC in 2003, I had a coworker who was a psychologist and her grandmother was living with her for a little while visiting from Barbados. Her grandmother was close to eighty years old then I believe and she enjoyed knitting. She wanted the grandmother to make a little change while she was at home knitting for a hobby. However, she knitted all kinds of baby items for people in NYC and really did not charge what she should have charged. I told my coworker that I would purchase two sets from her to keep for my future child!

Her grandmother knitted a white set for me which included: a newborn sweater, booties, dress, and receiving blanket. The second set included a pink dress, hat, sweater and receiving blanket for a baby 3-6 months old. I have kept these items in a rubber maid storage container to preserve them. I had not really opened them to look at them. They have been tucked away in our closet in this container.

It is funny because I had been looking on line for some knitted "elves" hats for pictures.
Two of my husband coworkers knits on a regular basis and one of them gave him this step by step manual for me to knit one on my own and she also told him that she could knit one for us. I would only need to give her the yarn that I wanted in the different colors and they can make these things in a day.

I found a picture of the exact hat that I wanted done and a couple more as well. Many of them are on sell on line, not necessarily in the colors that I want, but the style. It is amazing how prices change.
I am pretty positive that I paid a total of $90.00 for these two sets of knitted baby items back in 2003, which was not bad at all for 2 dresses, 2 sweaters, 2 hats, 2 receiving blankets, and a set of booties. The white one was made from a softer yarn and the pink one was heavier.

My mother taught me how to knit, cross stitch, and macrame back in the day. I was really "domesticated" at a young age and I did not even know it! I remember making a stuff animal basket that hung over my bed, purses and so many other things.
I believe that I began the cross stitching and the rest somewhere between 4th and 5th grade. We used to take simple craft classes and all of that good stuff. I never kept up the skills since I was so young, however, I am glad that I was exposed to it.

I would love to make a quilt for each one of my kids. Both sets of my grandmothers made quilts as well. I have some beautiful quilts that they gave us as children and I still have one in my possession. You really don't need to use the heat with these kinds of quilts on your beds!
Maybe I will try to make it a point to knit something every quarter!

Here are a few pictures of the items that my coworkers grandmother made for me back in 2003.

Not the flu...

We are just returning home from spending a half of a day in the doctors office in pain and having tests run on me. What I thought was the flu, was not. They swabbed my nose and ruled out the flu. However, I had chronic head, neck and and spinal pain all day today and the pain started yesterday.

The doctor felt as if it was meningitis and told us to go to the ER for a Spinal tap to rule it out due to the pain that I had upon arrival. However, after three different shots, my temperature came down and I was able to move my neck. We take for granted the little things that we are able to do. The pain was so bad that I needed help getting into the bathtub, getting dressed and everything today before we went to the doctors office. It was horrible. Thank God for my husband. He looked like a puppy dog looking at me in pain.

The doctor told me to go home and take the medication since my symptoms were much better and she stated that it sounds like viral meningitis and she noted that my affect was much better after the shots they gave.

She advised us to go home and call her if the symptoms return so that she can fax her notes to the emergency room for the spinal tap procedure. I am now able to hold my head up and turn my neck and that is a good feeling. I only have a little pain in my lower back but she prescribed medications to help with that.

So, we get to hold off on the spinal tap since things are better. I was not looking forward to the procedure, but I was willing to do what was needed to get better, because it is a serious condition and I was in really bad pain. The doctor noted that I was severely dehydrated as well. I tell you, if it is not one thing, its another. I just thank God for his grace and mercy.

I hate that hubby had to miss the preseason game here tonight. He did not care because I was in bad shape and we spent all day in the doctors office and he said that he needed to watch over me tonight due to my condition earlier. As he stated "it is only a preseason game" and my health was more important.

Finally...

What a way to start the first day of September!

I received an email from our SW early this morning advising that our home study document was completed, approved (of course) and ready to go. Translation, we should be having a copy in our hands any day! It seemed like it took forever for the final document to be prepared and completed. However, everything worked out fine and perfect timing.
I think that I really stopped pressing over it because I already a date in mind that I wanted to have the document in my hand if we did not have a placement by a certain time with our current agency. I knew once I had the home study document that I could take it elsewhere (another agency) if I needed to by the end of this month.

We have been finishing up the final details on our profile since we had to start from square one again because it was not backed up when the computer crashed back in July after our vacation. It is all good because we went in a different route with designing our pages. I must say that my husband did a fantastic job designing the pages and hopefully I will be able to show one of the pages in the future without our pictures on it.

A few weeks ago we were asked if we were open to both genders or was our preference still female. We advised her that our preference was a female infant, however we are open to being shown to both. I am being a little flexible! We also advised them that our profile could be shown to some upcoming situations that we were called about. Hopefully, I will be able to post something soon.

Mini

I think that the new mini laptops are the best thing for those who want to carry around a portable device ( I received my mini last week). Those who know me, know and understand that I love devices. I really love devices that will assist me with being a little more effective and efficient and not breaking my back down while I am out and about.

I am in love with the size and light weight of this little thing. It can actually fit into a few of my purses if I wanted it to. However, I have a sleeve for it and it fits right into one of my brief bags and totes.
It is so light and awesome for those who need some something lighter. I am looking forward to not carrying my heavier laptop since I have my new mini when I do not need a larger screen.
In the recent past and for many years I had a bad habit of carrying too many things
and heavy bags.
I have done much better the past two years. However, this mini takes the cake. It is so light that it is not even noticeable in your bag. It can really fit into a diaper bag!

I think this is an awesome device for the mobile mom who does not need to carry a heavy laptop on her back in addition to a child.
Yes, it is pink, a soft girly pink. I am in love with the size more the anything else, and the price was decent as well. The only thing about this mini is that it does not have a CD drive, but it is all good. Thats what the computers at home are for.

More than pink...

Diaper bags continued....

Another mom and I had a discussion about diaper bags and we both agreed that a mom needs more than one diaper bag these days. I love different types of bags and I have been collecting a few good finds since this past winter. When I run across a good deal in the store I grab it. I am not finished adding to my collection of diaper bags and these are just every day type bags for me. I thought that I would share a few pictures of a few that I have on the blog and not exclude anyone by just showing my inner circle.

The awesome part is that I purchased all of these bags for really good prices. Four of the bags were retailed priced at $100.00 each. I managed to grab them for about $29.00 t0 $39.00 for the higher end ones and the others were deals as low as $7.00 and $14.00. I actually purchased one of the EB bags for $14.99 and I am not for sure why it was marked down that low, but I was happy to find it because they are pretty good diaper bags and very functional.

Who would have thought that regular diaper bags would become pricey?
I am familiar with the designer diaper bags and their price tags, but I am running across more and more diaper bags that have large tickets on them. I guess it is the sign of the times. The positive part about it is that there are so many different diaper bags to select from now. Thats a great thing for me because I love switching out bags and coordinating a little bit.

I will continue being a savvy shopper and finding the everyday ones at a bargain at some of my "good finds" stores. I am sure that I will have to break down and purchase one of my favorites that has a higher ticket, but I will wait on that. Trust me, it will get used to the fullest if I am paying full sticker price from the store.

pink

I love pink. I wanted to share this picture of a very chic diaper bag that I found for a deal last month.  It was too cute to pass by.
I was practicing with natural light and using the flash in the nursery over the weekend and I decided to take a picture of a couple of things. (As you can see, the wood trim has not been painted yet. My husband promised to finish the trim work this coming weekend.)

I decided to let one of the nursery's bears pose with it.
This is one of those baby bags that a person would not wear often, however, when you do wear it, it makes a little statement because of the color and the design. My husband was a little shocked that I purchased it, because I am not a trendy purchaser, however, he did agree that it would look hot with all black or chocolate as I mentioned and it does have a soft quilted pattern.

It is actually a very nice diaper bag with a changing pad and really neat compartments inside. I like the fact that there are so many different diaper bags out there now and Mommy's don't have to look like old maids with boring bags all of the time, especially if you are not carrying a purse. I really think the color makes this diaper bag.

details

I enjoyed being able to take pictures this past weekend at a neighbors baby shower. I was able to focus on some of the details and practice with my camera. I am enjoying this too much!
The shower was held at her sister's house who also lives in our neighborhood, so I did not have to drive far! I made a personalized basket for her with things from her registry and other items that I found that she would need when she brings home her baby. I also scrapped a simple card for her to go with her color theme. I did not take a pictures of the basket before I left, however, her photographer at the shower took a picture of me with it coming through the door. The photographer and I connected and exchanged numbers. She's a SAHM who does photography and wants to get back into scrapping also.
My basket and card were a hit. I am known for making custom baskets for friends when they have showers to fall in with their theme. I really enjoy personalizing it for the person.  The funny thing was when she was handed my basket and card, she knew it was from me and she told everyone that she was wondering if I was going to make her a basket because she has seen the baskets that I have done for other friends and neighbors! I was tickled to death, because I knew she was expecting a basket too.

Yeah for....

Technology!

We were able to see the pictures and retrieve them with a card reader. This card reader pulled up all of the pictures that I had ever taken with this camera from the memory card, deleted and all. I think that it is awesome. It is a little thought provoking though. It goes to show that even when you think something is deleted, it really is not!

Thank you Gracies Mom and Deanna for informing me of the sites to download the programs! The only thing that I needed was a card reader and it worked! We loaded the card reader onto my laptop since we had his apple sitting until we recovered the photos.

I hope to have the pictures up on a slide show in a day or so. I prefer to load the pictures on to my husbands computer with a disc into his iPhoto for the slide show since it is easier do set up slide shows with the iPhoto.

Lessons Learned....

I wanted to share some pictures from our family vacation at Myrtle Beach the week of the 12th. I took about 375 pictures during our vacation with family. I should have made my slide show when I downloaded the pictures, and I would still have them. When we returned, I down loaded all of the pictures to my hubby's Mac on last Monday into Iphoto.
I did load about 5 pictures on my FB account and I will share those, since that is all I have.

On Thursday, my husband installed a program on his Mac that was given to him so that he could look at our neighborhood's security camera's and not have to use my PC to monitor the activity at the amenities in the neighborhood. Needless to say, when he installed the program there was some sort of glitch with running it and the program kept running. He made an appointment and took the computer to the Apple Store to have the techs look at it. Unfortunately all of our pictures from June and July that he had not backed up.

However, the pictures are somewhere on the computer and we will probably have to pay several hundred dollars for a recovery specialist to find the missing pictures and all of the data that we had. So, hopefully, one of hubby's co workers will be able to retrieve everything so that we will not have to lose the recent data put on the computer. If not, we are waiting on one of the locations that the Apple store recommended for a recovery specialists. The Apple store did not wipe it clean on yesterday so that we would have an opportunity to have a recovery specialist to recover the data to try to recover the recent information saved on the computer.

Let this be a lesson learned to all, to immediately back up all of your pictures instantly when you download them. I am praying and hoping that are our pictures will be recovered by the specialists. I was one of the main persons taking pictures of everyone at the beach and I captured so many beautiful shots of everyone during that week. We had so many family members present that it would be a shame to lose all of those pictures.
Besides that, mostly everyone was relying on me to email or send the pictures out on discs so that they could print their own pictures. This was truly a hurtful lesson to learn on my behalf. In addition, I was in the process of putting our family vacation into our profile for the adoption agency. It is really a shame.

1 John

1 John 5:14, 15

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us:
And if we know that he hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have petitions that we desired of him.

Practice makes

perfect....and I need a lot of practice!

Here are a few practice shots that I took last night with the camera. I have not ventured with all of the different settings yet. However, I am practicing with a few of the settings and it will take some time. I am enjoying the practice.

We went to a Best Buy in a neighboring city/county to pick up a large memory device for the camera last night and on our way there we saw a mini carnival in one of the mall's parking lot. We decided to stop by and snap a few shots to test the camera out. We took the pictures from the parking space beside the carnival.

I kept it on auto settings for most of them because I was not comfortable with the other settings. I love the picture of the ferris wheel and the sky. It was about 9:20pm last night when we took these pictures.
I will not continue to subject my readers to practice pictures. I posted these as a point of reference for myself over the next few months as my photography skills improve. I am sure that the pictures that I will post will gradually improve over time.

New toy

Mommy has a new toy...

I wrote a post back in January titled " I need a Big girls camera" after trying to take pictures from across a banquet room and missing good shots at an event that I attended. I was beyond frustrated, and that was the straw that broke the camel's back!
I spoke to a few photographers (Jodi, thanks for all of your help too) and began my research in January after the event and my research continued through February and March. I made a decision around late February on Canon.

I decided to wait to purchase it during the summer months since we were still finalizing all of the adoption process costs during the winter. A new camera was not at the top of the list since we had just purchased a brand new camera last summer that I had not yet learned to use proficiently. However, I will still use my Sony Cybershot because it takes excellent pictures for a tiny camera with 10.1 mega pixels, opitical zoom 5x, smile shutter and wide angle lens 28mm. It is easy to put in my pocket or purse whenever we go out and it has really been wonderful having it with us to journal our adoption journey with pictures. However, it can not give me the flexibility of what I need for taking pictures from a distance.

My new toy arrived today and I am beyond thrilled! I am glad that I was patient because I was able to get what I wanted. Now, I will have to be patient with myself and learn how to really use this camera. This is one toy that will not collect dust!

I love planting flowers

however, I do not enjoy the heat!

We spent today planting the flowers in our landscape beds and pulling weeds that grew through the landscape fabric and rocks! Gotta love the southern bermuda grass.

Long story short, we were supposed to have a residential landscaper pull the rocks out and put down a tougher landscape fabric and kill the existing grass growing up in the bed. However, he was in the process of hiring another worker to replace one and he could not do it. We held off on planting the flowers back in May because we knew we anticipated having the work done. It looks like we will wait until the fall to have it done because we were kind of tired of waiting. I guess it is hard for these landscape companies to keep good help too.

We spent most of the day out in the sun planting my flowers in the landscape edge, pulling grass from the bed and trimming the bushes. As my father would say, "Yes, I have a farmers tan" from being in the sun for most of today. I still have a few more flowers to put in, but at least we have bulk of it completed.

This crape myrtle tree is special to us. My parents
brought tiny twigs to me with a little rootball Dec. 2004 when they came and spent the first Christmas in our home. All of them have grown. We cut them back every year and they grow taller. They brought me three when they came. Two of the trees grew and survived and the third one did not. The next year, I brought one more from my parents home and it is doing well. I have three beautiful crape myrtles that are flourishing. We take pictures every year. It is hard to believe this was tree was just 3 sticks and so tiny that they brought it in garbage bags and it took off like a weed. My mother enjoys giving me the little crape myrtles that pop up in her yard from her mature ones.

The potted flowers have taken off since early June!
