Prior to leaving NYC in 2003, I had a coworker who was a psychologist and her grandmother was living with her for a little while visiting from Barbados. Her grandmother was close to eighty years old then I believe and she enjoyed knitting. She wanted the grandmother to make a little change while she was at home knitting for a hobby. However, she knitted all kinds of baby items for people in NYC and really did not charge what she should have charged. I told my coworker that I would purchase two sets from her to keep for my future child!
Her grandmother knitted a white set for me which included: a newborn sweater, booties, dress, and receiving blanket. The second set included a pink dress, hat, sweater and receiving blanket for a baby 3-6 months old. I have kept these items in a rubber maid storage container to preserve them. I had not really opened them to look at them. They have been tucked away in our closet in this container.
It is funny because I had been looking on line for some knitted "elves" hats for pictures.
Two of my husband coworkers knits on a regular basis and one of them gave him this step by step manual for me to knit one on my own and she also told him that she could knit one for us. I would only need to give her the yarn that I wanted in the different colors and they can make these things in a day.
I found a picture of the exact hat that I wanted done and a couple more as well. Many of them are on sell on line, not necessarily in the colors that I want, but the style. It is amazing how prices change.
I am pretty positive that I paid a total of $90.00 for these two sets of knitted baby items back in 2003, which was not bad at all for 2 dresses, 2 sweaters, 2 hats, 2 receiving blankets, and a set of booties. The white one was made from a softer yarn and the pink one was heavier.
My mother taught me how to knit, cross stitch, and macrame back in the day. I was really "domesticated" at a young age and I did not even know it! I remember making a stuff animal basket that hung over my bed, purses and so many other things.
I believe that I began the cross stitching and the rest somewhere between 4th and 5th grade. We used to take simple craft classes and all of that good stuff. I never kept up the skills since I was so young, however, I am glad that I was exposed to it.
I would love to make a quilt for each one of my kids. Both sets of my grandmothers made quilts as well. I have some beautiful quilts that they gave us as children and I still have one in my possession. You really don't need to use the heat with these kinds of quilts on your beds!
Maybe I will try to make it a point to knit something every quarter!
Here are a few pictures of the items that my coworkers grandmother made for me back in 2003.

Sooo pretty, your baby girl is going to look gorgeous in those.
Thanks Terrie,
When I purchased these back then, I did not have an idea of what I wanted. These are the items she was making so I just told her the colors and she did the rest. Its more of a keepsake item for me. I am sure I will put baby girl in it at least once for a photo opportunity.
I have a pretty, vintage like newborn dress that my mom kept when I was a newborn that I will probably have a photo taken with my camera.
Most of all, I enjoyed being able to help her grandmother make some spending money. I had no desire of having a child at the time! We were engaged later that summer.
How pretty Kristy. I really like cute sweaters. My friend has already started on an ecru sweater for us this morning. She really got a kick out of seeing her work on the internet.
Thanks Angela. Mine are old fashioned and simple, but I like that.
I found a couple of things that I waould like to have made. So between my husbands coworkers who knit daily and a few places I found on the internet, my options are wide open. I may try to do one hat on my own to see how far I get. I dont know when, but at some point.
I am sure that your sweater will come out really nice! For whatever reason, I am really into the infant hats now.
Really nice and pretty....My favorite color I have some to realize!!!! I wish I could knit like that.....
Celeste,
I am a big fan of Pink! I am sure that you already knew that. I wish that I could have been a little bolder and stepped out on faith with painting the nursery pink. However, I chilled and went neutral, but we are trying to figure out how to tie in pink accents or either we will repaint the room another girl color.
I am going to try to knit an infant elves hat within the coming months. I will keep you guys updated. Thanks for stopping by! I can't wait to see your girls.
