Today was the first day of our two day adoptive parent training sessions with the agency. It was an awesome session and very personal. There was one other couple there participating with the training session and they were very down to earth. We were able to ask questions since it was not a packed house. I believe initially that the agency was anticipating at least 8 African American families attending the session. There is a need for more African American families for domestic adoptions. The staff members present during the training appeared to be very excited and passionate about their positions and assisting families with their needs on both sides.
The agency provided a wealth of information for us as well as answers to some of the questions that prospective parents may have towards open adoptions and the whole adoption process. We were also introduced to the different staff that handles different phases of the adoption process. The most interesting portion of the training today was the activity that involved us defining the different feelings that we may have as adoptive parents as well as trying to relate to the feelings that the birthmother or birthparents may have during this process. We were supposed to have a birthmother come and share her positive experience with the group today. She was running late and unable to come due to an unforseen circumstance. However, another adoptive family and birth mother are on the schedule for tomorrow's training session.
