HS completed today

Today we had our final home visit today with our SW. I am so glad that we are finished!
Our appointment was scheduled for 1pm and we finished up around 2:40 pm. She arrived at our front door at 1:02pm after riding to the amenities which is walking distance from my home. She loved the amenities and she appeared to enjoy our home inside and out. She gave us a choice of talking first and then looking at the home or vice versa. She came through the front door giving us praise about our home and she had only entered the foyer, so it was a good sign for me. I am very comfortable in my own home and we were not nervous at all.

We began by giving her a tour of our home, including the unfinished basement, and then we sat in the family room and talked about completing our profile to be shown and one more item that we can fax in. She literally looked in every room and commented.
I intially thought that she was only going to look in a few rooms, but she took a grand tour. She enjoyed it and seemed to love our style of decorating and the style of the home as well based upon her reactions as I opened up each room and the comments that she made.
I had all of our doors closed upstairs so that we could give her a formal tour and each room would be a surprise. We saved the nursery for last and she was really surprised to see that we had pulled things together so quickly. She was indeed tickled by all of the items in the closet as well. She knew that we were a serious couple, but I think she really found out the truth we she came to our home.
She enjoyed our dog and he enjoyed her! She wanted him to be left out because he is apart of our family and plus she likes dogs. He was on his best behavior as usual.

We had a brief discussion about our preference list that we submitted a while back in addition to gender preferences and flexibility. We discussed what we would and possibly would not accept in terms of family history or pregnancy history. As we discussed those items I did advise her that it is hard to say on paper with some things, because with some concerns it is a case by case scenario and it is a little easier to determine with all of the information and not speculations. Some things are not as cut and dry as others and it takes prayer and discernment. She asked us to be flexible because sometimes things can happen quickly and many times they call the family selected to meet the potential birth family at last minute notice. However, she said that she would try to give us 2-3 day notice and we told her that we could work with that. She informed us that the other family that was waiting was placed so there is no one else waiting for a baby. So, we will be the only family waiting for a placement until our friends complete their hs, and they are right behind us, literally.

We should have our completed profile in her hands by Friday of this week or the latest next Monday. She brought us a copy of a profile and letter to BM family as she promised so that we could look at it if we had any questions while working on ours.
Hopefully, she will have the completed homestudy completed within a couple of weeks so that this will be all done and we will have copies for our record.

On a side note, I am not for sure why people freak out over of the SW coming to their homes. It was a nice visit to and a way for her to see where we live and how we live. We left our garage as normal and we did not superficially clean it because it is a garage and it has things in it. It is pretty organized anyway, but we did not try to make it look like something that it would not be on a typical day.  She was not touching anything, she was just observing and looking. The main things she checked to make sure that we had were smoke detectors and we had plenty and C02 detectors. I even pointed out the fire extinguishers that we had in the pantry. We also pointed out the safety gate on our deck since it is a steep set of steps to the basement, patio and backyard. We use the gate to actually keep our dog on the deck when we are sitting outside or grilling on the weekends. Yes, I had my potted flowers out on the deck and all of the pots that I filled 2 weekends ago at my front entrance. Curb appeal is everything, whether it is a home study or not!

Something funny:

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you that my hubby came home for lunch (an extended lunch) for the meeting and he put some oatmeal and raisins cookie dough in the oven to bake prior to her arriving to give a fresh baked scent. The house already smelled of vanilla and christmas cookies from some candles that I had on for about an hour before she came. We blew those out and he scooped out 4 spoonfuls of the cookie dough and made 4 cookies. I must admit, it did smell good! He was on point with baking the cookies. He has heard of people doing that when agents are selling their homes and it kind of sets a cheerful mood for those entering into your space. We ate them at the end of our visit as she was leaving and yes I did offer her a cookie before I ate mine but she did not want any. I was starved by the end of the visit. I am too thrilled that this is completed.

Yeah!!! What a huge step to check off your list!!! May I ask what agency you are using that has no other "in waiting" couples!??!! I pray for you guys often!! Keep us posted!

Kelly,
We are using a local agency, however they are all over the country and well known. Email me privately and I will give you the agency. They do not have profile pictures and things up of couples and you must reside in the state. They are a well known agency that has been around for many, many years and religiously. They have a need for those families who would like AA or AA-biracial infants. They also do interstate for couples adopting from their agency, but they have not had any yet. I think they were trying to work with their sister agency in Louisiana and other tri states, but they have not had any interstate yet this year.

We will see how long this takes, but I am not rushing it. I have a few other agencies that what were referred to me if I would like other options. I am going to give them an opportunity. Email me and I will give the information to you. I will check and see if there is one in your state as well.

Thanks Angela! This was a milestone met. This should have been done months ago, but things happen for a reason. Its funny bc when we started the ET program we were aiming to get it done in one month and the agency was too. The IA process really pushes things due to time and all of the international paperwork.

Thanks KMR,
We will see what happens after our profile is completed. It is a little scary, but it is reality now. So, we are being patient and prayerful. We have a few more things going on too, so we are not preoccupied with just this now since we are finally completed!

Nakira,
Thank you girl! You can relate to my feelings right now-right! All too well. I will email you later. I am going to post a few pictures later when I get the smilebox to load on his mac again.
I will definitely be hiring you at some point for some unique personal items that we do not feel like doing when things are settled!

Soror, I am so happy for you and your Honey-Do. Now you can relax a little bit and get back to enjoying one another before your tiny blessing comes---I can't wait for the annoucement.

Love you so much for your encouragement and the way you uplift mothers and mothers-to-be!

As one of the 20-pearls vision, I am so blessed to be able to call you my Soror!

Soror E.,
Thanks! That was so sweet and sisterly.
Well, I can relax a little bit. Like you, I am working towards my Ed.D. I started last summer. I have to fly to my school for a week for one of my intensives this summer since I am a distant student. This has kept me busy of the past year with taking a class every 8 weeks. I am in an Advanced Doctoral writing class now that is a required course. The class that I am taking on campus for the intensive seems okay but I have some work to do and some books to finish reading before I go for my week, as well as power point presentation to submit before my arrival. It keeps me busy and a little focused and not too preoccupied with things on the adoption end.
We will have to talk via email when you get through your wait period. Thank you for the encouragement and support as well. I will keep you posted on our progress.

Yay!!! Congratulations! Now we wait together! Daniel spit on the floor during our homestudy visit! (I was mortified!) She laughed! I also burned candles & quickly blew them out before she came! Our SW too is the nicest person, I love her!

Sweet Patience said...

Thanks Ali!
I am glad to know that I am not the only one who loves candles and scented the house up sweet prior to her arrival! Wow, he spit! My dog loved the SW and she loved him but he wanted to keep jumping up on her during the visit. For the most part, he was well behaved and she loves dogs.
I am glad that this is over with. We are working on getting the completed profile pages into her within the next couple of days. I think when we finished talking on Tuesday, it became real in my mind that things could happen at any time and all of these thoughts were racing through my mind. Yes, we will be waiting together! I will keep you updated.

CONGRATS! I know it is a huge relief to have that behind you. Now the fun part begins...waiting for that precious little baby God has already picked out just for you.

Sweet Patience said...

Jodi,
Thanks! It is a relief that we are finished with that part and are finalizing the final things i.e. profile. I am happy that you received your products for Destiny! You have enough to start your own shop.

Chassidy!
Yes, we are really trying to wrap our minds around the fact that it can happen quickly and we are trying to pull the final things together. It is exciting and kind of scarey at at the same time. We are trying to remain focused and prayerful during this time. I will keep you updated!

I'm glad I found your blog! It was great hearing about your home visit because that will be the next step for us after the paperwork is finished. Cookies in the oven is a great idea!! :)

Sweet Patience said...

No problem Laura!
Let me know if you have any questions. We just completed the HS last Tuesday. You can always email me if you have any questions. A few quick notes to remember: fire distinguishers should be in your home, remove any fire arms in the home or either have them in a safe, gun cabinet that locks or gun case that locks; smoke detectors present in the home and CO2 detectors. If you have pets, you will need to have their records updated with all shots updated. Depending on the age of your home, it is some other items that they may look for. We have a newer home so those items were not an issue. Email me if you have any questions. I think you all will be fine!

So funny about the cookie thing. :) Had I not already met and known that our SW was the sweetest, laid back lady in the world, I probably would have been worried and doing the same things. So glad you are getting closer and closer to your little one!

Hi Deanna,
We really were not stressed at all actually. The only thing that I did that morning was spray of the sidewalk and the deck. I accidentally left dirt the previously weekend from planting my pots for the front steps. I washed off the pollen on the deck furniture and table and that was about it. I was comfortable because we met her back in November and she is very laid back. She actually went to UNC Ch and knew a lot when she did my home study interview which was cool because we are close to the same age. The cookie thing was just a little extra!
