What are you doing today?

Are you on or off?

Today we are celebrating history as we do every year. We are often reminded that this should be a day on and not off in terms of service in our respective cities.

Our service activities for my organization started 5:30 am this morning and continue to this afternoon. I chose to be at the parade and take pictures for the organization. This morning many of our members served breakfast at a homeless shelter. Then we had two different shifts at another location for sorting goods for needs women who need interviewing clothing, makeup and etc. Lastly, we have the mlk parade/march where we unite together.

What did you do today?

Edit: I will add pictures from todays activities on tomorrow.

Definately "on" for us.

7:15am Hubby and I drove our "village" to our local MLKjr March.

8:00am With Men, Women, Children--of pretty much every nationality in our area, we joined arms for a 7-mile marched.

12:00 March/Rally ended and festivities with reinactments of several Civil Rights historical moments took place (Navi participated as an actress in this). Spotted a young sister with the biggest-baddest 'Fro that was definately representn' the past-present and future (hey miss jass!!).

2:00 took the "village" to the museum that had a special dedication for MLK/Civil Rights Movement. This was both exciting to me to be able to introduce them to a museum's work at this level; however, it bothered me that these teens had no clue as to who MLK is (except for he had a dream???). It equally bothered me that these children (some Pan-African some not)ALL are children of parents who are not of color and view the Civil Rights movement as a "Black Thing" and not a HUMAN concern ---but I move along because at least they respect me enough to mentor their children.

3:30 went "under the bridge" and gave out clean socks and blankets to many homeless youth living "under the bridge".

Around 5:30 treated all my "village" to "Food for stomach-Food for thought." Which gave them the opportunity to talk about social divide/social unity which gave me the chance to "listen."

7:00ish sang "Happy Birthday" Stevie Wonder style to Michelle Obama as if she was in my home--and then kicked every one of them little "angels" out my house before they got a chance to do hoodrat things as if I was D-U-M.

So, yes, we were on point with it being a day of service.

...Now, I'm going to bed with a smile on my face that much was accomplished today!
