The Little Things..

The little things are what count in a marriage....

Last night I was on the computer in between doing some work for my class, responding to some emails and responding to comments on the blog when my husband took the dog back outside to use the bathroom. He came back in the house with a big bouquet of beautiful flowers. He had to go to the grocery store after work to purchase something sweet for work, so I guess he went to the fresh flowers department and thought about me and left them in the car when he brought the food in. I absolutely love fresh flowers and I was really caught off guard. He waited until about 9pm to bring them in the house.

I never know when his surprises are coming, it always throws me off, and I am always surprised! I was looking for one of his custom cards or poetry attached! Nothing was attached, just the flowers this time! While there was no specific reason for the flowers when I asked him jokingly. He said, "just because", and he texted me during my work day today to tell me that he is trying to do even better this year (I am not mad at him for wanting to have even higher expectations of himself and how he appreciates me). I never had any complaints about how much he did for me or showing how much he appreciates me because he is such a caring and unique person and I always come first in his eyes. (I wonder what is going to happen when this bundle of joy comes?)

I never know what to expect from this man. He is so spontaneous and thoughtful, whether it is big or small. I just had to give him a shout out and let him know that it is appreciated.

It would be hypocritical of me not to talk about the small things that my husband does for me that is a big deal and keeps me going. Especially when I am privy to conversations of single acquaintances who desire to be married to their significant others or either to find someone to love them for who they are and honor their existence. When I listen to single acquaintances and they talk to about their relationships and their desire to be married, I always have to remind them to make sure that they are seeing the bigger picture of the committment in marriage and not just "things". When you have dated and gone through rough times dating and make it through, when marriage comes and both parties have matured, grown up, are ready for marriage, and God is in between that union, it is an awesome experience. Not to say that there are not rough times in marriage, because there are. It just makes it so much better to know that you are in it together for the long haul and to honor the committment we made to God.

The one thing that I always remind them of, its not how much things cost all of the time with having a man that cares for you. There will be large gifts and there will be small ones, and I enjoy the bigger surprises too! To me, it is the thought and the creativity that I love. The mere fact that a man has your best interest at heart when you are married (or almost there) and appreciates all that you do as a wife. The best advice that I can give someone who doesn't feel appreciated is to let your spouse or significant other know up front, but in a loving way of how you feel. I have found that men are not mind readers and we will only disappoint ourselves thinking that they can figure out what our every desire!

We have to honor the small things and fine details.....for they are the very things can make or break a marriage. I love the just because's ............

I heard the most profound statement two weeks ago on a radio station. I am not for sure of the guest author that was talking on the show, but he was talking about relationships. He said that "when we marry, we are attracted to the personality and when or if we divorce a person, we divorce them because of their character".
How deep is that?
